  17. John Leo of USN&WR has done an excellent job of cataloging some of the
  18. most egregious examples of Political Correctness in 1991.  Some are
  19. just ridiculous, others are downright hilarious and stupid.  Some are
  20. petty, because PC excells in turning the petty into a cause.

  22. HOW MANY RACISTS CAN DANCE ON A PIN?

  24. A knotty problem in PC theology arose at the University of Cincinnati
  25. when a group of Arab students were taunted during a gulf-war rally.
  26. The Student Senate condemned the offenders for racism, but that
  27. criticism could not apply to the sole black student spottdd in the
  28. crowd because the official administration handbook says that only
  29. whites can be racist.

  31. What to call a black who shouts "Arab, Go home!"?  An Egyptian
  32. student, Khalid El-Shazly, had the answer.  Just call him a
  33. "European-influenced African."  Theological problem solved.

  38. The Eddie Bauer catalog offers pitch-saturated kindling wood "felled
  39. by lightning or other natural causes."

  42. DEAD PAINTER HARASSES PROF

  44. Nancy Stumhofer, English instructor at Penn Stat'es Schuylkill campus,
  45. has been sexually harassed by Goya's famous painting, "Naked Maja."
  46. Any picture of a nude female, she argued, "encourages males to make
  47. remarks about body parts."  The offending picture had hung on the same
  48. classroom wall for 10 years before it began harassing Stumhoffer.  It
  49. has been exiled to a student center, where it is presumably on probation.

  51. EXCITING YEAR AT BINGHAMTON

  53. The little-known State University of New York at Binghamton had a
  54. big-league PC year, comparable to a few weeks at Stanford or Oberlin.
  55. At Binghamton:

  57. * A student was charged with lewd and indecent behavior for posting
  58. two Penthous centerforlds on his dormitory door.  (A student panel
  59. found him guilty, but the administration later dropped the charges).
  60.  
  61. * As part of freshman orientation, new students were divided up into a
  62. "wheel of oppression" to show how minorities are held down in America.
  63.  
  64. * Pipe Dream, the university newspaper, reported that one example of
  65. alleged sexual harassment in the economics department was this
  66. compliment:  "She's so smart, and pretty too."
  67.  
  68. * A mob of 200 students, apparently under the impression that a
  69. white-supremacy rally was going on, invaded a lecture hall,
  70. brandishing sticks and canes.  They harassed the speaker, calling him
  71. a "white dork devil," broke a framed picture he was showing to the
  72. audience, and punched a student outside the hall.  Actually, the
  73. speech, sponsored by the non-PC National Association of Scholars, was
  74. on conditions in Berlin.

  78. "Phallocentrism," a feminist term, has merged with the
  79. PC/Deconstruction epithet "logocentrism," to form the new jawbreaking
  80. word for overmacho, overrational [!!!] white males known as
  81. "phallogocentrism."  Coming next year: phallologoeurocentrism.

  90. THERE GOES 'MAN AND SUPERMAN'

  92. It's "weeding," not "censoring," when books are permanently removed
  93. from the shelves of the Mildred Magowan School library in Edgewater
  94. Park, NJ.  "Read About the Policeman" was weeded because the offending
  95. volume should have said "police officer."  "The Negro in America" was
  96. pulled because it should have used the more correct "black" or
  97. "African-American."  "I don't want you to think we are censoring
  98. books," protested librarian Martha Palmieri, adding that many books
  99. simply have to go "due to racial, ethnic, and sex bias."  The
  100. Philadelphia Inquirer has reported that "weeding" is taking place
  101. across New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

  103. INDIANS JUST DON'T GET IT

  105. At the College of William and Mary, a movement to change the nickname
  106. of sports teams from the Tribe to something less offensive to Indians
  107. ran into a discouraging obstacle: An enterprising reporter for The
  108. Remnant, a conservative campus newpaper, interviewed the chiefs of all
  109. of Virginia's resident Indian communities and found that every one of
  110. them like the Tribe and wanted to keep it as the college nickname.

  112. ARIZONA BATTLES NERD OPPRESSION

  114. The Diversity Action Plan of the University of Arizona is concerned
  115. with discrimination against the students because of "age, color,
  116. ethnicity, gender, national origin, physical and mental ability, race,
  117. religion, sexual orientation, Vietnam-era veteran status,
  118. socioeconomic background or individual style."  understandably, the
  119. general idea is to get behind everybody who is not a straight white
  120. male, but wait - what is "individual style" doing on this list of
  121. victimizations?  In response to a telephone query, "diversity
  122. specialist" Connie Gajewski explained that this category would include
  123. nerds and people who dress differently.  "We didn't want to leave
  124. anyone out," she said.

  126. FREE AND OPEN DEBATE, PC-STYLE

  128. The highly correct University of Michigan sponsored a three-day debate
  129. on PC.  Taking no chances, the sponsors invited 21 speakers who either
  130. favor PC or deny it exists [seeing no contradiction...] and three
  131. speakers who oppose PC, then labeled the conference "The 'PC'
  132. Frame-Up: What's Behind the Attack?"

  134. GOODBYE COLUMBUS

  136. * The city of Berkeley has canceled Columbus Day and will celebrate
  137. October 12 as Indigenous Peoples Day.

  140. University of Cincinnati.  It's Student Senate has declared the

  156. WITCHES IN THE NEWS

  158. * Not one single witch was named to the committee planning this year's
  159. 300th anniversary commemeration of the infamous witch trials in Salem,
  160. Mass.  Laurie Cabot, the official witch of Salem, called this shocking
  161. snub "a hate crime."

  163. * Feminist witch Margot Adler, dressed in orange and black for
  164. Halloween, said New York City has telephone covens, made up of
  165. stay-at-home witches who do magic ovr the phone.  Ms. Adler, who does
  166. not like to be photographed with brooms, works as a cultural and
  167. political reporter for National Public Radio.

  177. At the Smithsonian's first genuinely PC art exhibit, a painting of
  178. cowboys defending a water hole was said, in a press release, to
  179. reflect "the plight of an embattled Anglo-industrial elite in an era
  180. of strikes and widespread immigration."

  182. A MILESTONE IN SEXUAL HARASSMENT

  184. Richard Hummel, professor of chemical engineering at the University of
  185. Toronto, said his sexual-harassment case cost him and his university
  186. more than $200,000 in costs and fees.  Hummel was convicted in 1989 of
  187. "prolonged and intense staring" while swimming in a university pool.
  188. Barbara Amiel, a columnist for Maclean's, described the case as "the
  189. utter debasement of the genuinely serious nature of sexual harassment."

  191. CAN IT BE HIS EQUIPMENT?

  193. Jan Kerkhoven, a male feminist and a doctoral student at the Stanford
  194. School of Education, was barred from a class in feminist studies.  As
  195. the Stanford Review reports it, the department said that the Feminist
  196. Studies 203B was oversubscribed.  Nonsense, Kerkhoven said:  "Nineteen
  197. students enrolled, and I was the only one excluded."  Kerkhoven
  198. acknowledges the perasiveness of male dominance and the oppression of
  199. women.  That is the Correct view, but he also wanted to take a wider
  200. "humanist" perspective and discuss the dehumanization of society
  201. (i.e., males and females).  That was incorrect.  He quoted the class
  202. lecturer, Susan Krieger, as saying that he "didn't have the right
  203. commitment to a gendered outlook."

  207. Ms. magazine has a new rule:  Articles about lesbians must be written
  208. by lesbians.

  210. WORDS AND OTHER OFFENSES
  211.  
  212. * The Asian American Journalists Association issued a pamphlet saying
  213. that reporters should never use the word "industrious" to describe
  214. workers or students of Asian-Pacific heritage.  Other dangerously
  215. stereotypical and off-limits words for Asian-Americans included
  216. "reserved," "quiet," "philosophical," "serene" and "smiling."

  218. * At the College of WIlliam and Mary, guidelines exist to nonsexist
  219. language said that the new term for "unwed mother" is "mother."
  220. "Kingpin" becomes "key person," "Truman's widow" becomes "Bess Truman"
  221. and the phrase "male chauvanist," apparently redundant, is simply
  222. "chauvanist."

  224. * Other words banned last year include "Lazy Susan" (offensive to
  225. woman, particularly women named Susan), "my wife," (changed to "my
  226. partner"), "niggardly" (sounds like a racial epithet [to the
  227. ignorant]), and "beat the drums" (slur on Native Americans).
